A Message of Solidarity
Friends & Partners,
The official announcement that Donald Trump will be the next President of the United States has many implications for our lives and our work. During their campaign, we heard directly from Trump and Vance about how they will harm the rights and humanity of Black and Brown communities, immigrants, women, and members of the LGBTQ+ community, among many others. We know from past experience that a Trump presidency will deepen systemic racism, economic inequities, and hate that fuels violence.
At the state level, we are also disappointed by the likely results of Prop 6 and Prop 36 that were driven by the false “tough on crime” narratives that continue to exploit and criminalize California’s most vulnerable communities.
Despite the dispiriting outcomes, at the national and local level, this is a moment for solidarity and strength. Fellow Angelenos and allies, we have a history of coming together to make our communities safer and healthier, regardless of the state of politics. During Trump's first presidency, we made remarkable progress locally in decreasing the number of youth in the carceral system, preventing community violence, and securing important non-punitive community investments across LA County and the country. These successes are a testament to our tireless work in collaboration with peacemakers and our dedicated partners.
Together, we can harness that same spirit and momentum to rise again.
To do this, Urban Peace Institute is calling on philanthropy, donors, and local leaders to join us in a rapid response. Your commitment is critical to help us maintain the progress we have collectively built over the last two decades. This includes urgent investments in community-led initiatives and organizing. We must prioritize funding agencies and programs that enhance community safety, support mental health services and community well-being, and provide opportunities for our youth.
Let’s stand united as a movement.
We will advocate with our partners across the country for the rights and dignity of every individual. In times of uncertainty, it is crucial that we resist any attempts to undermine our shared humanity, amplify our voices, and support one another.
Make a gift to our rapid response fund today to help us sustain the momentum that is critical to the fight ahead.
In the days and weeks to come, Urban Peace Institute will share opportunities to champion safety and justice. Together, we will navigate this challenging landscape and emerge even stronger.
In Peace and Solidarity,
Fernando Rejón
