Governor Newsom Signed AB 28!
WE DID IT! AB 28, the historic Gun Violence Prevention and School Safety Act, was signed by Governor Newsom!
This legislation puts real dollars—nearly $160M annually—behind California’s landmark policies to comprehensively respond to the public health, safety, and equity crisis of gun violence, the leading cause of death for American children today. AB 28 will sustain the critical but temporary investments California has made in effective gun safety initiatives, like the California Violence Intervention and Prevention (CalVIP) grant program.
The Los Angeles Violence Intervention Coalition, convened by the Urban Peace Institute, joined partners from Moms Demand Action, Everytown and Giffords to call on Governor Newsom to sign AB 28. The Coalition agencies lack consistent multiyear funding to sustain and expand staffing to effectively achieve the mission of saving lives from gun violence. AB 28 is a revolutionary step to #FundPeacemakers.
This victory is entirely due to the tireless advocacy of volunteers, survivors, partners and allies who are dedicated to ending gun violence across California--thank you for supporting peace!
In Peace,
